EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL - Eden

It' s raining since 2 days. It is the Xmass storm, they say. So I' m spending quiet hours at home reading a book, playing with my daughter and ...of course  listening to good music.
Everything but the girl and Tracey Thorn voice can add a bit of heat to a wet and rainy day.
I hadn't  listened to this for years and  now I am positively impressed rediscovering it. Another gift from Tracey wonderful voice.

This is probably the last post in 2013 so Happy new Years to all of you.

PFM - Storia di un minuto

Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) is probably the most famous Italian band of progressive rock.  Franz Di Cioccio, Franco Mussida are well known names in the italian music world and still on the scenes.
This  LP was a milestone of '70 and it is impossible not to remenber a piece like "impressioni di Settembre" ....wonderful. As final consideration I want to underline, with a bit of nostalgia, that the cover of vinyl LPs, and in special way in the '70 and beginning of '80 ones, had a great importance; really art works and progressive rock covers were at the top !! We lost for the moment (never say never)  this part of the game.

MALIKA AYANE - 9/12/13 Auditorium di Milano

I was invited to a charity show with a concert of Malika Ayane, I know Malika and her voice so I corfirmed my presence. It was a nice evening; nothing exceptional, short (one hour of music) but at the end a good show.
The kind of music is "easy listening ". It is OK for a relax evening. For who doesn' t know Malika  (she  is italian with maroccan parents) I post the link with her first CD "Feeling Better"( 2009). It had  good success with some hits on TV advertising spots.

KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS - Doppelganger

Just for fun... It could be a definition of Kid Creole "performance" (we cannot speak only of music here). I add the opportunity to see a live stage  of Kid (and probably most famous Coconuts) and what I remember is the impressive stage, the great professionalism of the performance, the incredible numbers of  scene changes during the show. For the period  (it was in the '83) a completely out of the schemes "concert". Why I' m speaking now about Kid & the Coconut? Oh Yeah..... I just listened to the radio an old song of the band "London Beat" and that band  was the supporter group to the Kid Creole "performance"!!!

PREFAB SPROUT - Steve McQueen (acoustic) 2007

It was 1982 when The Prefab Sprout first LP was issued. At that time I played that vinyls so many times..... I liked it. What is in this post is part of a reissue of the original LP dated 2007 but with that reissue a second CD was included with 8 acoustic traces.
It was really a good surprise for me listening to this. Like the original LP I am listening to these acoustic versions many many time and .....really I like it.

KRISMA - Chinese Restaurant (1978)

CHRISMA (Cristina and Maurizio) first  and KRISMA later, these are the names used by this italian duo. In the '80 well known not only in Italy but also in other nations (it seems they have a lot of fans in Japan too). Since a lot of year I hear nothing about them but recently I receive a recent photo of  a friend together with Krisma and as a background  a "Chinese Restaurant". So the connection is quite easy to do !!!

THE KILOWATT HOUR - S. Mathieu/D.Sylvian/C.Fennesz (19/9/13 ALcatraz Milano)

Attracted by David Sylvian name I take the ticket for this concert at Milan. I saw D. Sylvian with R. Fripp several years ago and it this was the occasion to see him again.
Reading about the group THE KILOWATT HOUR I was disappointed to see that no voice or songs are part of the performance but electronic experimentalism and ambient music with video clips. I search on the web and I "tried " to listen to some piece (really not easy to listen to). So at the end I go to the concert with very few expectation and ready to attend to a bouring performance......but it was not so!!! It was really worse!!! Unbelievable. One hour and 15 minutes of flat and monothone noise with recorded voice  saying nonsense. Also the video on the back was something ridicolous. The three guys were sitting on their one desk (one for each one) looking at their  laptop video (and really I thought  "are they reading their mails or watching a film?")
Really a very poor experience last night. On the way home driving my car I prefer to listen to a CD. I played the new Franz Ferdinand one ....... Fine!!! That was the best part of last night.

DJ KRUSH - Krush (1994)

This is the first solo work of DJ Krush. The Japanese dj and producer is one of the most important names in the Trip Hop scene. A good compromise between the heavy hi pop experience and ambient, cool and electronic music. Result is something that I like and consider an "elegant".
fruit of '90 period.

TRACEY THORN - Love & the opposites

TRACEY THORN  name will be forever linked to EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL experience. Anyway she also provided some other experiences and collaboration (Massive Attack, Style Council are the famous ones) and some work with her name. This is a 2010 work and appear as an intimate and sometime melancholy ones. The great voice of Tracey is anyway enough to appreciate the work as it is.

PETER MURPHY - MILAN (Magazzini Generali) May 27, 2013 Mr. Moonlight Tour

At the end the right moment comes....... It was since a long time I desired to attend to Peter Murphy/ Bauhaus concert and finally it happened. My fear was to be disappointed by my expectation but it was not so.
It was a good concert. Mr Moonlight Tour 2013 with Peter Murphy playing and singing all songs from Bauhaus  repertoire (35 years celebration) was an occasion not to be missed. Yes some negative points there were: the location was too small, acoustic not perfect but....... it doesn' t matter.  I was there!!!
About 2 hours back in the music history.  Double Dare, All What We Wanted Was Everything (one of my favourites), She's in Parties, Bela Lugosi's ..., the final with Ziggy's Stardust. The voice is there, Peter is there ....and we wait for the new solo work coming soon!!!!

Thank You to lasyboylive  to post it!!!!  GREAT

THE ASSOCIATES -Heart of glass

I find this  Associates single recently on other blogs and I want to post it. "Heart of glass " was the hit song from BLONDIE (1979). I have some problem to decide if the ASSOCIATES cover version is better than the original or not. For sure Billy Mckenzie's voice give to this song a special feeling. Two versions so different but both so beautiful. One of my favourite song from the unforgotten Billy.
Heart of glass was included in The Associates 1988 album "The Glamour Case ".
Here you have both; the original version from Blondie and the Associates cover. It is up to you to choose which you prefer:

BIGLIETTO PER L' INFERNO - Biglietto per l'inferno

Another post dedicated to the '70 Italian progressive rock. Il BIGLIETTO PER L' INFERNO was a cult band in the north Italy (originally from Lecco/ Como area). Strange history of the singer that after the experience with the group and songs like "confession" (part of this work) decided to became friar  and he is now in a monastery.
The band produce two LP. The first (the best) is this one dated 1974.
The band make a reunion few years ago with a similar name (adding .FOLK) but really I don't know which the result is.

DREAM SYNDICATE - Medicine Show 1984

The Dream Syndicate second work " Medicine Show " is dated  1984
The band was the most famous of the "Paisley Underground " movement. Steve Wynn after the Dream Syndicate disbanded in 1989,  continued with a long solo career and many collaborations.

I am waiting to see the Dream Syndicate reunion (a tour was done in 2012) with a new tour  planned this year with also an italian date. May 29th at Bloom at Mezzago (not far from Milan).

BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO - Banco (1972)

After the "beat" period, it was the time for "progressive". And again some italian bands take example from the english  area.
Three bands can be considered the most  rapresentative of the "Italian progressive movement".
a) Premiata Forneria Marconi
b)Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
c)Le Orme.

Here we have  the "Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso" work named BANCO originally released in 1972. Enjoy it!!

I GIGANTI - Mettete dei fiori nei vostri cannoni

'60 was the period of "beat" generation and music follow the moment. Of course UK and London was for Europe (and Italy) the reference point. This Italian band "I GIGANTI" (the giants) melt the beat sound and look  London style with typical italian melodic music. The result is a little bit Kitch but for that moment in Italy was a revolution (this is the opinion of some older friends). The "special" voice of the singer helped to their success. Recently there was a partial reunion of some component and this is a compilation (2006) of their old success and some cover of other authors; It is the case of "il vecchio e il bambino" (F. Guccini) and of "il pescatore" (F. De Andrè).

KRAFTWERK - The Man Machine

Kraftwerk from Dusseldorf  are really the "beginning" of electronic music. From their experience  electro- music took different directions. New wave, Techno, Hi-pop and pratically any kind of future music areas took advantages from Kraftwerk sound experimentation.
The Man Machine is a 1978 work but would be a 1988 or a 1998 ones. How not to be impresses by "The Model" ? Really an out of  time track with several covers from different bands during the years.
